Escaping patrolling duty may put policemen on night duty in trouble.
The city police are installing a system that will detect whether the cop assigned a particular location for patrolling was actually present there or not. After initial trials in some localities, the police department is going with installing the night monitoring system across the city.
Residents in parts of Adajan area surprised when a policeman contacted them to seek permission for installing a sensor on the boundary wall of their apartment.
“All in our apartment were happy with the move as it ensures that policemen will come here every night on night patrol,” said Ashwin Patel, a resident of Anand Mahal Road.
A cop needs to install the mobile application which shows special numbers that are read by the sensors installed. He will have to flash his smart phone in front of the device to register his presence in that area.
“The censors are being installed at some strategic locations night patrolling is necessary,” said Nipurna Torawane, additional commissioner of police, range II, Surat.
“Every police station has been asked to submit details of all the important locations in their jursidiction,” Torawane added.
Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana said that the experiment in some areas of Umra police station yielded good results.
“The routes where the sensors were installed didn’t witness any crime during the night in one month,” he said.
