SURAT: Contrary to the expectations, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor that started on two routes of the city covering 30 km distance in all, has received good response. In last one month ending June 18 , from when both the routes started its commercial operations , more than 4 lakh people have travelled by BRTS buses.
At present Surat city has two routes of BRTS operational. First route of Udhna Darwaja to Sachin is in operation since last one year. However 20 km long canal corridor from Dumas resort to Sarthana jakat naka was inaugurated on April 20 and passengers were given free ride till May 18.
” We have had daily income in the range of Rs 1.4 lakh to Rs 1.6 this last month . From the increasing flow of passengers on daily basis we can safely presume that it would cross Rs 2 lakh in another month.” Said SA Gamit, of BRTS At present the daily passenger flow is 14,000 to 17000 people on a daily basis.
Meanwhile nearly 800 people of the city have obtained smart cards for the daily travel in BRTS buses.
In second phase of BRTS, another 44 km long number of routes are likely to be open in the city by August 2015. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is looking to ferry at least 1 lakh people on daily basis, once two phases of BRTS becomes functional in the city.
