Just as the real monsoon is likely to begin in the region, health department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has started a campaign to root out unhygienic conditions from the city eateries and restaurants. As a part of the campaign, four known restaurants of the city located in Adajan area were punished. A factory producing tomato ketchup was also punished for preparing ketchup from infested vegetables.
Officials of health department said that during their checks they found conditions in Coffee culture, Kansar Hotel,Girnar Hotel and Have more restaurant unhygienic. They were fined Rs 5,000 each and were served notices for having improper kitchens.
Similarly, a millipede was found from the pumpkin which was being added to the tinned preparation of Ketchup in a factory named Jyotiraditya food products located in Pandesara. Officials destroyed nearly 400 kg of pumpkin and 62 kg of butter from the premises of this factory. The samples of the food products were collected from this factory and sent for testing.
In all 1311 hotels and restaurants were checked. 463 were issued notices and destroyed nearly 4,000 kg of unhygienic food products. An official from the health department said, “We will not tolerate any conditions in food joints where health of the people could be affected.”
